Gamescom in Cologne is Europe's largest gaming event - and right in the middle of it all: students from Campus Heidelberg. Two teams from the Virtual Reality & Game Development degree programme took the opportunity to present their projects and ideas and make valuable contacts in the industry.
The Moon Lake Studios team, founded by students Nadine Pfeifer and Alina Grießer, is currently working on a game in which the protagonists have to fight their way out of a laboratory - with exciting moral decisions for the players. The dream of having their own studio emerged from a university project. Despite difficult financing conditions, the two want to continue on their path and remain as independent as possible.
Studio ENSO, consisting of four Heidelberg university friends, is also very ambitious. In addition to creative work on new games, they are also intensively involved with the legal and financial framework conditions that are crucial for their own studio. "If you're passionate about something, you can overcome these hurdles and have fun doing it," says co-founder Bastian Opitz.
For both teams, Gamescom was much more than just a trade fair visit: they used the days specifically for networking, exchanging ideas with publishers and attending specialist forums. Their goal: to have their own stand next year - and thus be even more visible to the industry and the general public.
With their commitment, the students at Campus Heidelberg are demonstrating how practical and future-orientated training in the field of game development is - and how a project idea can become a real career prospect.
